“Queen of Katwe” Movie Review

Queen of Katwe is one of those surprisingly extraordinary feel-good movies that has you walking out of the theatre believing you can achieve every one of your dreams. This Disney movie, rated PG, is a phenomenal pick for a family night out, a romantic date night, or you can just go with your pals. Looking back to the turn out at the cinema, Queen of Katwe appealed to absolutely everyone, from parents with school-aged children to elderly couples.

This inspirational tale of a young girl from Uganda who learns to play chess, which consequently changes her life, had every enjoyable aspect of a dramatic sports movie. There were unforeseen elements of humour, romance, and tragedy that left you undecided about whether to laugh, blush, or cry. Check out the trailer here.

I know what you’re thinking; a movie about chess, really? How interesting can this movie be if it involves the most slow-paced sport that has possibly ever existed. Like many other dramatic sports movies, such as Rudy or The Blind Side, there is so much more to the movie than the sport. This is especially true in the movie Queen of Katwe because it takes place in a completely different country and invites you into an entirely different culture.

I recommend and encourage everyone to go and watch Queen of Katwe. It’s a unique movie, based on a true story, that everyone will enjoy. Be prepared to have your heart strings tugged at as you witness such an inspirational journey.
