Have you heard about Crayon Rocks?
Crayon Rocks are, well crayons in the shape of a rock, but they have a purpose.
Crayon Rocks were developed by Barbara Lee, a special needs teacher who worked with elementary aged children for 23 years. She invented Crayon Rocks after being inspired by occupational therapist Jan Olsen and her Handwriting Without Tears program. She learned from Mrs. Olsen how important it was for children to develop a strong tripod grip early in their education process — handwriting skills depend upon this. Seeing that a simple tool to develop these skills in young children wasn’t readily available, Ms. Lee set out to develop one.
They are 100% Natural and non-toxic, made from U.S.–grown and processed Kosher soy wax.
We have tried many, many different types of writing tools with my son, we’ve tried the triangle crayons, jumbo crayons, skinny crayons and none of them helped.
My 4 year old is the only left handed person in the family, and I find it’s hard to teach him how to grip his pencil properly. He has always gripped with a fist instead of his fingers.
After just a few days of using Crayon Rocks, I found him gripping other crayons/pencils properly, the same way he was gripping the Crayon Rocks, with his fingertips instead of a fist.
I also find that they glide smoothly on paper without having to apply too much pressure, which helps my 4 year old draw more precisely.
I think these are must haves for children learning to use crayons. They are small enough for little hands and promote motor skills development.
They make great party favours, gifts and even great stocking stuffers.
