“Moana” Movie Review

I don’t know about you, but I’m a huge Disney fan. There are very few Disney movies that I don’t enjoy watching. When I was invited to watch the premiere of “Moana”, I was super excited. The movie trailers that I saw periodically on TV for it were a bit vague about the storyline, but I couldn’t miss an opportunity to watch a new Disney movie. Let me tell you, “Moana” did not disappoint. It was a super cute movie with a really neat storyline!

What is “Moana” about anyway? Without giving too much away, it’s an animated movie about a teenage girl, Moana, who embarks on a dangerous quest to save her home island. With the company of a silly bird and a big-headed, yet charming, demi-god named Maui, she faces many obstacles on her journey.

As many have probably noticed, the classic ‘handsome man saving the damsel in distress’ storyline seems to mostly be a thing of the past. In this movie, Moana is a fierce female lead character that is capable of kicking some serious butt. Despite her struggles to discover her identity in the beginning, her perseverance and bravery are truly inspiring throughout the movie.

Furthermore, it’s nice to see some more multicultural material produced by Disney. “Moana” portrays Polynesian culture which is really neat to see.
I think it’s beneficial for Disney to introduce different cultures to children through movies, that they may not be exposed to elsewhere.

My favourite part about “Moana” was the music. The songs that the characters sang were super catchy and entertaining. I almost hope that this soundtrack replaces the obsession with the songs from Disney’s “Frozen”, which children STILL sing, three years later. You even get to hear Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson sing because he is the voice of Maui, the demi-god! Imagine that, The Rock singing in a Disney movie. How adorable is that?

I highly recommend watching “Moana”, especially to those Disney fans out there! Comment below your favourite Disney movie, and let us know if you plan on going to see Moana in theatres near you!
