Kids, they don’t come with a handbook.
Those of you who follow the blog, know that I have 4 kids. It’s not always sunshine and rainbows over here. My kids fight, a lot! It’s very rare to have them all playing together nicely for more than 30 minutes. My daughter and oldest son CANOT play together at all! They are like nite and day. Within 5 minutes it’s an all out war with them.
The 2 older kids fight about EVERYTHING! They can never agree on anything, including what to watch.
Did you know that Netflix has a variety of family-friendly shows that explore a range of real-life issues with equal measures of humour, angst and heart. No matter your situation, chances are there’s a show and episode that can kickstart a dialogue around the topic just by watching it together.
We recently had a problem with my 3 year old son that was having issues following rules, after sitting him down and trying to explain to him how important rules are, he just would not listen. We had the idea of putting on one episode of his favourite shows (Puffin Rock), where they learn why it’s important to follow the rules. While watching the show, we paused and asked him questions about what was happening and explaining why it was very important to follow rules. He quickly understood, gave us a hug and said sorry. Sometimes, kids really do learn things when it comes from a character they love.
Next time you are facing an issue with your child, why not turn on Netflix, watch one of the bellow episodes and discuss it with them. I really find that this helps get the conversation started and especially for younger children, they understand a little more.
