5 Ways to Declutter Your Home for Good

If there’s one thing we all struggle with in our homes, it’s clutter. It appears seemingly out of nowhere and multiplies faster than you can tidy it up if you don’t stay on top of it. You want your home to be a relaxing space where you can make memories with your family and unwind after a long day. But, when our homes are always cluttered, it’s difficult to relax! So, let’s take a look at some tips to combat the clutter and keep your home looking neat and tidy.

Create more storage space

Clutter isn’t always junk that has no purpose. It might be items around your home that you use, but don’t have a dedicated space for. The obvious solution here is to create more storage space around your home. This might involve moving or getting rid of some furniture to add cabinets to your walls or build a cupboard, but it’ll help you keep things tidied away when they’re not in use. 

 

Another alternative is to make use of the vertical space in your home by adding shelves and hooks. It’s a great way to store coats, hats, and anything else that could be elevated from the floor.

Store belongings elsewhere

If adding storage isn’t an option, perhaps due to your landlord not giving permission to build onto the walls, then you need another alternative. Perhaps you have a family member or friend that could store some of your belongings in their garage for you? That way, you don’t have to get rid of anything and only have to travel a short distance if and when you need those belongings.

Use the six month rule

Have you used it in the last six months? Will you use it in the next six months? 

 

If the answer to both questions is no and the item isn’t sentimental, it’s probably time to either throw, donate or sell the item. You’ll be surprised at how many belongings you don’t actually need or want anymore!

Do a deep clean of your home at least once a month

This might sound a little obvious simply for sanitary reasons, but going through the motions and deep cleaning your home once a month will help prevent clutter from really building up.

 

Alongside that, be mindful each day and put away dishes, store away clothes and do chores so that each morning you wake up to a clean and tidy home.

Think twice before purchases

Finally, perhaps you have a clutter problem because you’re guilty of impulse buying from time to time. When you’re thinking of buying something, follow the six month rule again. If it won’t be of any use in the next six months, you probably don’t really need to buy it. Using this method will prevent you from buying unnecessary items and save you money!
