In 1953, P.A. Geier was bought up by the Walter E. Schott Organization. The Schotts renamed the company Royal Appliance Manufacturing. But they weren’t absolutely committed and decided to dissolve Royal just as soon as they got it.
A group of Royal employees headed by Stan Erbor wanted a shot at the company in 1954. He got it, and the company thrived under his leadership, expanding all phases of operations in 1969. Erbor was active in the company until he passed in 1981 at age 80.
Enter Dirt Devil
Straight out of 1981, a group of investors saw an opportunity to purchase Royal and to bring some fresh strategy to it. With this new leadership, sales skyrocketed from just under $5 million in 1981 to $408 million in 2000.
In ’84, Royal introduced a groundbreaking new cleaner, the Dirt Devil® Hand Vac. It quickly became a huge hit, selling over 23 million units. This gave Dirt Devil more room to roam the cleaning industry.
Today, Royal (now TTI Floor Care North America) manufactures Dirt Devil uprights, quick cleaning hand vacs, stick vacuums, canister vacs, and carpet washers. These products are now sold through major retailers nationwide.
TTI Floor Care North America’s mission is to be a premier consumer products company. Striving to recognize the needs of customers and supply them with quality products that solve their cleaning problems. Under these philosophies, Dirt Devil continues to build brand loyalty through strong consumer satisfaction.

The FlipOut crevice tool is really amazing. I love that it stays attached to the unit so you don’t loose it. However, the tip of the crevice tool is a soft, thin rubber. I anticipate it will probably wear out or tear in the future.
The Powered Stair and Upholstery Tool attachment for the nozzle works best for brushing/sweeping/dislodging particles.
While the Above-Floor Dusting Tool is best used for removing dust from cabinet, ceiling fans or any high appliance.
Having four cats you can imagine the amounts of hair they leave everywhere. On some days where I just passed the vacuum, I finish putting it away just in time to find clumps of hair from a wrestling match they just had.
I’m telling you, I can’t get enough of this powered stair and upholstery tool. It picks that cat hair right up with such ease.
Lugging out the big vacuum to pick up the litter debris is now a thing of the past. This little unit is truly outstanding. It’s super light, and easy to use with one hand, even when adjusting the handle.
The canister is easy to remove, and has an efficient filter system to protect the motor. The canister comes off with the click of a button, for easy dumping. There’s a small removable filter that can be rinsed clean, too.
- Easy canister cleaning
- Compact design
- Long runtime
- Powerful suction
- Great attachments
- No charging stand
- No attachement storage
Lack of a charging stand and onboard storage for the attachments is a bit of a drawback, with this model you simply have loose accessories laying around. However, the good outweighs the bad and I honnestly believe that the Dirt Devil FlipOut is currently one of the best handheld vacuum on the market.
